Jilna Shah explains - Craniosacral Therapy

Written by Community Member Jilna Shah

I’m Jilna and I’m a Craniosacral Therapist living and working in Brighton. I am also a Movement and Meditation facilitator, working mainly in community settings and centering Black and People of Colour, QTIBPOC and refugees and migrants. I’ve also run yoga and meditation classes and workshops specifically for women of colour and have found these spaces to be such source of connection and community.

My practice reflects my passion to co-create ways of being that help people to connect more deeply with themselves and the things that matter most in life with compassion and care. Through the cultivation of trust and safety, I invite our whole selves into the spaces that I create and hold -  including those parts that we may have felt we’ve needed to hide or contain, for various reasons.

The spaces I hold and create are queer and trans inclusive, fat-positive, and are inclusive for disabled people. I also design and deliver tailored wellbeing workshops and courses for groups and organisations. I hold these in-person in Brighton and London or online via Zoom.

These are the workshops I currently run for organisations:

  • Gentle Movement, Meditation and Deep Rest

  • Self and Community Care for Caregivers and Activists

  • Recovering from Burnout

  • Boundaries and Liberating Relationships

  • Connecting and Team-Building

  • Lunchtime Movement and Meditation

All of these workshops include elements of; movement, breathwork, meditation, deep rest, reflection and sharing. If you have any idea for a workshop, or would like to work together to develop one/a series specifically for your group or organisation, get in touch.

I work with clients 1:1 using Craniosacral Therapy. I practice from a therapy room in Kemptown.

Not everyone will be familiar with Craniosacral therapy and there are hardly any people of colour who practice it – one of the key reasons that motivated me to train and to bring this beautiful modality to our communities.

Craniosacral therapy uses light touch to ‘tune in’ to the subtle sensations of a client’s system, working with the nervous system to support the body’s innate capacity for health and healing. It is as powerful as it is gentle. Underlying the Craniosacral approach is the belief that more health and wellbeing is always available to us; sometimes we need some compassionate holding to help untap  this. The therapy can be used to address anything from acute to chronic illness, injuries, and trauma to more general ‘maintenance’ and support with the demanding lives that we live. The benefits of a treatment can range from an overall feeling of deep relaxation and ease to transformative insights and releases into parts of selves that were previously inaccessible.

You can come and experience my movement work at WellFest on April 1st where I’m running a ‘Rest and Restore’ workshop.

You can read more about my work here, including about 1:1 Craniosacral therapy sessions. I offer a free call where you can ask questions and get more of a feel for how Craniosacral therapy could support you.
